ড. এইচ. এম. মোছারফ হোসেন ১৯৭৪ সালে শরীয়তপুর জেলার লক্ষ্মীপুর গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি ১৯৭৯ সালে লক্ষ্মীপুর সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ে স্কুলজীবন শুরু করেন এবং পরে ১৯৮৪ সালে নাগেরপাড়া সরকারি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হন। তিনি প্রতিটি স্তরে ট্যালেন্টপুল বৃত্তি অর্জন করেন। তিনি ১৯৯০ সালে এসএসসি পরীক্ষায় প্রথম বিভাগ এবং ১৯৯২ সালে ঢাকা কলেজ থেকে এইচএসসি পরীক্ষায় ঢাকা বোর্ডের সম্মিলিত মেধা তালিকায় ৩য় স্থান অর্জন করেন। এরপর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ফাইন্যান্স বিভাগ থেকে ১৯৯৫ ও ১৯৯৬ সালে যথাক্রমে স্নাতক (সম্মান) ও স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন, উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করেন এবং প্রথম শ্রেণিতে উত্তীর্ণ হন। ২০০৭ সালে একই বিভাগ থেকে তিনি পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। ২০০৮ সালে তিনি যুক্তরাজ্যের গ্রিনউইচ ইউনিভার্সিটিতে অনুষ্ঠিত IFRS, ISA ও IAS বিষয়ক “Train the Trainer” প্রশিক্ষণ কোর্সে অংশগ্রহণ করেন, যা ICAEW সমন্বিতভাবে পরিচালনা করে এবং বাংলাদেশের বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয় আয়োজন করে। প্রথমে তিনি ব্যাংকিং পেশায় যুক্ত হন, তবে খুব অল্প সময়ের মধ্যেই ১৯৯৯ সালে তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ফাইন্যান্স বিভাগে প্রভাষক হিসেবে যোগ দেন। বর্তমানে তিনি একই বিভাগে অধ্যাপক হিসেবে কর্মরত। ড. হোসেন ২৩টিরও বেশি গবেষণা প্রবন্ধ স্বীকৃত জার্নালে প্রকাশ করেছেন এবং বিভিন্ন পাঠ্যবই ও প্রবন্ধ পর্যালোচনা ও সম্পাদনা করেছেন। শিক্ষকতা জীবনে তিনি BBA প্রোগ্রাম ডিরেক্টর, প্লেসমেন্ট ডিরেক্টর এবং MBA প্রোগ্রাম ডিরেক্টরের দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন।
